PROTECTING OUR CHILDREN TODAY WILL SHAPE THEIR FUTURES TOMORROW

Africa has the youngest population in the world with more than 400 million young people aged between the ages of 15 to 35 years. This is a generation filled with potential and the power to shape the continent’s future. Yet, for millions of children across malaria-endemic regions, repeated malaria infections continue to interrupt childhood at some of its most important stages.
According to research, malaria disproportionately affects children in Tanzania, highlighting their vulnerability to infection. The predominance of P. falciparum mixed infections indicates the complex epidemiology in the country. The high burden in Lake zones stresses the need for new interventions.
Experts warn that malaria’s long-term impact on children’s futures deserves more attention.
“Malaria does not only affect health in the moment,” says Brian Tarimo, Principal Research Scientist at Ifakara Health Institute (IHI) and a Lead Scientist at the Transmission Zero (T0) programme, an international research programme working towards new genetic tools for malaria elimination
“It affects consistency in learning, childhood experiences, family stability, and the opportunities young people have to reach their full potential.”
“Africa’s future will be shaped by the young people growing up today. Every child deserves the opportunity to learn, grow, and contribute to their communities without repeated disruption from preventable diseases like malaria.”
According to the WHO World Malaria Report 2025, children under five remain among the most vulnerable to malaria across Africa. For many families, repeated illness during these early years places emotional, physical, and financial strain on households already navigating difficult circumstances.But the impact often continues long after early childhood.
As children grow older, recurring malaria infections can contribute to missed school days, difficulty concentrating in class, and disrupted learning routines.
“In many communities, malaria is not a once-off illness.
Children can become sick multiple times a year,” says Tarimo. “When this happens repeatedly, it affects entire families, caregivers, schools, and communities.”
Tarimo warns that developing new malaria prevention tools is critical to the wellbeing and potential of young people, and must remain central to the continent’s development priorities.
In Tanzania, institutions such as the Ifakara Health Institute (IHI) and the National Institute for Medical Research (NIMR) supported by international partnerships through Imperial College in London, are working together to drive innovation in gene drive technology to improve long-term outcomes for children and families.
This is done through Transmission Zero. “In our research, gene drive is a tool that allows specific genetic traits to be inherited at greater rates in mosquitoes. By propagating malaria resistance through mosquito populations, we can prevent the spread of this deadly parasite.”
Transmission Zero’s research is still in lab containment phase and focuses on Anopheles mosquitoes.
“In Africa, more people live in areas at risk of malaria, and experience 94% of global malaria cases. Protecting children from malaria today will protect their futures tomorrow, and ultimately the next generation of African potential.”
